SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCE

COURSE AT A GLANCE

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

5 GCSEs Grade 4-9 (including English Language and Maths) and 4/4 in double award Science.

SPECIFICATION:

BTEC Pearson National Extended Certificate - equivalent to 2 A-levels. BTEC Pearson National Extended Diploma - equivalent to 3 A-levels.

LENGTH:

2 years

This subject is equivalent to two or three A-levels.

WHAT YOU'LL STUDY

You’ll be amazed at the range of outstanding facilities and resources available to our sport science students. You’ll have access to some of the world’s best sporting facilities including; The Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, The National Squash Centre, City of Manchester Gymnastics, The National Cycling Centre, Etihad Campus, and the new East Manchester Leisure Centre. You’ll be exposed to innovative, research-led and applied curriculum in a range of world-class facilities in East Manchester. This course can be taken alongside the football programme, cycling programme or as a stand alone qualification.

Units you’ll study include:

  • Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Laboratory and experimental methods
  • Sports Coaching

BEYOND THE COURSE

You will gain clinical skills in order to be proficient in the preparation, testing, data handling and critical analysis of applied assessment methods. You will also explore all components of consultation, assessment and sports massage, in order to safely and effectively plan and conduct a treatment plan for sports performers.

You’ll also complete additional Level 3 qualifications that will run in and alongside your BTEC qualification including first aid, massage and coaching.

ASSESSMENT

You will complete numerous units across the two years you study on the course. You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical and theoretical based assessments and presentations.

FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The majority of students go onto Higher Education studying subjects such as Sport Science, Sports Rehabilitation, Sports Therapy and Sports Psychology. However the skills that you will gain during the two years will be transferable to a number of subjects at undergraduate level, as well as a number of different career pathways.

ENHANCE THIS COURSE THROUGH FOOTBALL

If football is your passion, we have the optional opportunity for you to develop your skills alongside your studies. Students studying either one of our sport courses can join our CITC Football Pathway, our specialist football training and development programme which is delivered by our partners City in the Community (CITC).

Please note that there are limited places on the CITC Pathway, so we are unable to offer all Sport students this opportunity. Priority will be given to students meeting the Priority Application deadline. Predicted grades, school references and performance at interview will all be taken into account when offering places on this pathway.

SPORT IN THE COMMUNITY PATHWAY

Students studying BTEC Sport & Exercise Science will be able to register for our new Sport in the Community Pathway.

By registering for this pathway, you’ll be given a guaranteed interview and employment trial with GLL – one of Manchester’s biggest employers in the sport and leisure industry.

Your employment with them can run throughout your time at Connell and beyond into university or full time employment. As a national company you will have the opportunity to work for them wherever you choose to go in the future too
