Mathematics is the most popular A Level nationally. This ancient subject has an ever-increasing relevance in our modern world. It’s central to understanding our changing climate, predicting and mitigating the spread of diseases, and ensuring security of online trade. It’s highly regarded due to the skills and resilience that are developed in mastering it.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Five GCSEs Grade 4-9 (including Maths, English Language and other supporting subjects). If you want to study a full A Level programme, you will need at least two grade 5s in supporting subjects as part of your five grade 4–9s.
Extra requirements: Grade 7 in GCSE Maths.

WHAT YOU'LL STUDY
On the pure side, a large part of the course is algebra. You’ll learn calculus and extend your knowledge of equations and algebraic expressions.
On the applied side, you’ll learn mechanics (the forces and equations that govern motion) and statistics, develop an understanding of risk and draw conclusions from data.
HOW YOU'LL STUDY
Maths is one of the best subjects to develop your analytical and problem-solving skills.
Studying Maths will help give you the knowledge and language to understand Science, Engineering, coding and abstract problems. You also develop skills in logical thinking, including proof and recognising incorrect reasoning.
In previous years, our students have benefited from talking to guest speakers from industry, a trip to PwC in Manchester and problem-solving sessions at the University of Manchester.
ASSESSMENT
There are three exams at the end of the two years of study: the first two are on pure mathematics topics, and the third combines the applied topics, statistics and mechanics.

Mathematics is highly regarded by employers and universities. By choosing mathematics, you will develop a sought-after skill set that will enable you to go on to do whatever you want. Some courses and careers that A Level mathematics students go on to, include: engineering, mathematics, computer science, medicine, accountancy and actuarial sciences.
