This is an advanced course that combines the opportunity to study a level 3 qualification with the opportunity to develop your own sporting performance through our partnership with Manchester City. The course investigates current issues and principles around the development of sports coaching and fitness.

What you'll study

The course does contain a generous amount of sports participation alongside the football element of the programme. Practical elements occur within many units such as Sports Coaching, Fitness Testing and Fitness Training and Programming. The practical elements of the course will be supported by class tasks, logbooks and both written and practical assessments to demonstrate your knowledge of the unit.

These units include:

  • Unit 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  • Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness
  • Unit 5: Sports Coaching
  • Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Unit 8: Practical Team Sports
  • Unit 13: Leadership in Sport
Enhance this course through Football

If football is your passion then we have the opportunity for you to develop your skills alongside your studies. Students studying either one of our sport courses can join our specialist football training and development programme which is delivered by our partners City in the Community (CITC).

We all share a “passionate commitment to excellence”. Our aim is to develop good people on the pitch and in the classroom. Students who opt to join this training and development programme will football training or match time as part of their timetable every day.

Our coaches are all qualified to UEFA B level, to improve players’ knowledge, understanding and game management.

Each of the sessions are set at a level to challenge the individual, where there’ll be different themes. These will be split over the session, where you’ll regularly take part in the different themed topics and end the session with a conditioned game.

Over the season you’ll be completing in the AOC and National Youth League. You’ll play a number of established football clubs, where the aim is to raise standards for and aspirations of talented football players in full-time education and outside of the Academy system.

Beyond the course

Students will play in the City in the Community BTEC league as well as national cup competitions. You will also undertake various qualifications relevant to the course. There are volunteering opportunities available to you, including CITC events, disability sports and school events.

Assessment

Work is assessed and marked internally using a broad range of assessment methods. Marked work audits will be completed on a regular basis throughout the duration of the course to ensure consistently high levels of Quality Assurance.

Future career opportunities

This course particularly suits those wanting to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector as coaches, instructors and leaders and who also have a real passion for football. It is also ideal for those wishing to progress to higher education to study a sport-related degree such as coaching, sports development and sports science. This course is linked to the Manchester City Community Football Coaching degree at Manchester Metropolitan University. Alongside the academic aspect of the course, you will also have access to quality coaching to enhance your football skills and playing ability.
