FILM STUDIES

If you love stories, art, history, and dissecting how the media shapes the way we see the world, this course is for you.

Film Studies isn't just about "watching films" — it’s an academic dive into film as a powerful art form, a multi-billion-pound industry, and a mirror to society.

You will study a range of films encompassing diverse genres including everything from silent films, musicals and foreign language films.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Five GCSEs Grade 4-9 (including Maths, English Language and other supporting subjects). If you want to study a full A Level programme, you will need at least two grade 5s in supporting subjects as part of your five grade 4–9s.

HOW YOU'LL STUDY

You will analyse how film form creates meaning and become adept at understanding how cinematography, mise en scène, sound and performance are used to tell stories, entertain and communicate ideologies.

Like all A Levels, this is an essay based course in which you will hone your writing and analytical skills, making it a perfect precursor for any essay based degree subject. However, you will have the opportunity to gain practical skills by making your own short film or developing your own screen play.

ASSESSMENT

Two written exams worth 35% each and a non-exam internal production piece worth 30%.

CAREERS AND DESTINATIONS

Students who study Film Studies at A Level usually go to university to study Media Studies, Film, TV Production or English. There are also options in degree-level apprenticeships in the creative industries.

Film Studies students typically wish to work in industries such as film, TV or journalism, a sector which is thriving in the Greater Manchester area.
