More about this course

What you'll study

Throughout the two year course, you will study all elements of business which will provide you with the skills and knowledge to progress into the industry. The course consists of 18 units in total and you complete 9 for each year of study.

In year 1 you will focus on marketing, business accounting and human resources. The second-year focuses on economics, law and ICT in business.

Beyond the course

In addition to your studies there are a number of opportunities which include trips and talks with UCFB (Etihad Stadium), Co-op, Warburtons and Jaguar-Land Rover. There are other guest speakers from other major businesses which you will meet throughout the course.

Working with the Co-op

Students studying for the BTEC Business (Level 3) will have the opportunity to apply for the Co-op Flagship Pathway in the upper sixth. The course content is the same, but you’ll also complete a work experience placement at the Co-op’s Support Centre, at 1 Angel Square in Manchester city centre.

You’ll get the chance to experience working in different business areas including Human Resources, Finance, Digital and Marketing. With your personal mentor, you’ll work on live business projects that will help you understand the workplace and learn more about the next steps for you and your career. You’ll get support from both your tutors at Connell, and the Co-op, and you’ll learn presentation skills and interview techniques, as well as how to develop your CV. At the end of the course, all students are guaranteed an interview for relevant roles at the Co-op, which may be an Apprenticeship.

You’ll get paid for this work placement, in line with the Co-op new starter rate that’s in place when you join, as long as you meet attendance, punctuality and other course requirements.

All units are assessed internally via coursework. This can take the format of extended writing, presentations, excel spreadsheets or website design. You will achieve a grade for each individual unit and they will add together to form your final grade which is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

Future career opportunities

The course will equip you well to start a career in business where employers value both your actual learning and the degree of independent learning and problem-solving ability you will have gained during the course. There are also a wide variety of business courses at university for which this course is a perfect foundation. This course is also ideal for progression onto a higher level apprenticeship such as Accounting, Business Administration and HR.
